Pre-Operative instructions

  1. Even though the vasectomy only takes 15-20 minutes allow for 40 minutes with Dr Flynn for the procedure.
  2. In most cases it is safe to drive to and from the surgery (unless you are prone to fainting) or sedation is given.
  3. If possible avoid aspirin and other anti inflammatories eg. Nurofen, Advil for 5 days prior to the vasectomy.
  4. Wear supportive underwear, or 2 pairs.
  5. Your partner is welcome to be present for the initial consultation and the procedure.
  6. At home, the day before the surgery shower and completely shave the scrotum up to and around the base of the penis.
  7. On the day of the procedure please bring in the signed consent form completed by yourself and your partner.
  8. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. Sedation is optional. If you opt for sedation, you will be given a premedication relaxant tablet to be taken 90 minutes before your appointment. You will be unable to drive yourself then to and from the clinic.

Post-Operative instructions

  1. Leave the dressing in place for 2–4 hours. If any oozing occurs then apply light pressure over the small wound. Do not get the wounds wet for 24 hours. You may shower after 24 hours but do not rub soap directly into the scrotum for 2 days.
  2. The local anaesthetic will wear off in between 1–4 hours, after which a mild to moderate degree of pain and discomfort can be expected, and Paracetamol can be taken. A varying amount of bruising or swelling of the scrotum may occur. Swelling and discomfort can be lessened by the local application of ice packs and lying with the feet elevated .
  3. In the rare case that the wound bleeds, ”pinch” with some gauze for 10 minutes then let go very slowly. Contact the surgery if bleeding is not controlled.
  4. Avoid arousal and sexual function for 3–4 days after the operation.
  5. Firm supporting underpants or two pairs of underpants, may be helpful in preventing discomfort and pain.
  6. It is advisable not to lift heavy weights or carry out any strenuous activities for 1 week after the operation.
  7. Dissolving sutures are used. In most cases no early follow up is required. If you have any concerns, please call the surgery.
